Cleveland High School recently hosted a special “Invite a School” Safe Driving and DUI Impairment Awareness Event, welcoming students from Bradley Central High School for an evening centered on the important message that choices behind the wheel matter.
One of the most memorable moments of the event took place during halftime in front of a packed gym filled with fans from both schools. Selected students—along with Cleveland High School’s principal—participated in a challenge where they dribbled a basketball, attempted a layup, and took a free throw shot—all while wearing drunk goggles that simulated the effects of alcohol impairment. The result was a fun, yet powerful demonstration of how drastically impairment can impact coordination and judgment.
Local radio and TV personality Steve Hartline served as the event’s emcee, bringing energy and impact as he shared a powerful message about the dangers of driving under the influence.
In addition to the halftime challenge, students participated in field sobriety tests led by law enforcement officers and volunteered at The 24/7 Movement’s Education and Awareness Booth. There, they helped spread the message of safe driving and responsible decision-making to their peers.
This unique event brought together students from both campuses to take part in interactive demonstrations and conversations that underscored the dangers of impaired and distracted driving. It fostered unity, encouraged peer leadership, and reinforced the critical truth: when it comes to driving, the right choice is always the safe choice.
