A two-phase program addressing distracted driving among teenagers. Driver inattention is a leading cause of motor vehicle crashes. The younger, inexperienced drivers (under 20 years old) have the highest proportion of distraction-related fatal crashes. The Monroe Carell. Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt is addressing distracted driving among teenagers through an innovative program that builds on a unique hospital-school partnership. The goal of the program is to offer a select group of teens an up-close look at what can happen as a result of unsafe driving practices and then encourage them to take the lessons learned in the hospital to their school and community by running a year-long distracted driving campaign. The campaign is a competition between various schools and prize money is awarded to the winning clubs. Program funding is courtesy of Ford Motor Company Fund and Community Services and the Allstate Foundation.
